Be the Change

I was getting the kids into their PJ's after bath tonight and I started to sing a song from a mixed CD my sister made. It was a Sesame Street song that Cole recognized, so he began to sing along....

"Well, you know I'm a GIRL who's gonna CHANGE the WORLD....she's gonna change the world, she's gonna make the world a better WORLD!"

And then Cole looked up at me and said, "How do I make the world a better world?"

It was an innocent enough question, but every now and then your child will ask you something simple and you realize that you'd better weigh your answer carefully. That maybe what you say will be remembered for years to come. That your answer could empower and inspire a young spirit.

"You make the world a better world all the time, Cole. Every time you tell Nana and Papa you love them. When you made Grandpa a Get Well card, you made the world better. Every time you ask your teacher how her day was, you make the world better. When you teach your sister something new, you make the world better. And every time you learn something new, you make the world better because you make MY world better, honey, and I love to see you grow and learn new things."

My son looked up into my face, grabbed my cheeks and planted a big kiss square on my lips and when he pulled away he said, "Is K a vowel?"

Man, that Cole really is changing the world just by those amazing questions he asks.
